What to expect at your first visit

Each study varies in what procedures are completed at the first visit.  You can expect most of the following to be conducted to see if you qualify for the research study:

• Informed Consent Form
• Medical history interview
• Review of current medications
• Vital signs
• Physical exam
• Blood draw
• ECG (varies per study)
• Urine test: pregnancy or drug (varies per study)
• Questionnaires
• Diaries
• Medication dispensation

Your first visit will vary in the amount of time it takes.  Plan on it lasting 1-2 hours unless otherwise indicated by a study team member prior to your visit.

The first thing you will do is to read the Informed Consent Form.  This will tell you why the study is being conducted, what will happen at each visit, risks and benefits, confidentiality, and alternate treatments available.  You will be given ample time to read over the consent form and ask questions.

You will need to be able to read the Informed Consent Form yourself as well as be able to discuss the study, ask questions, and receive instruction with the research coordinater.  Therefore, please bring with you any items you use, such as reading glasses, hearing aide, etc., that will aide you in these tasks.

Please bring a list of your current medications and dosages with you.

Drink plenty of water, even if you are fasting.  This will help with blood draws (if needed).  Water is always allowed.
